Some time ago Jetbrains removed the maven auto-reload from IntelliJ. The community was quite upset (and rightfully so), so eventually it came back as an option.
In order to enable it back go to the Maven window and choose Auto-Reload Settings…
Then just change the reload option to Any changes
Done!
